Definitions & categories of volunteers

“Anyone who willingly gives time to help the YMCA accomplish its mission without getting paid by the YMCA.”

• Program volunteers: those who have direct contact with Y members and people in the community. They help the Y lead and deliver programs and services; help with membership; or serve on program advisory councils, e.g., the Swim Team Parents Group. They may also offer community service as participants in a program, e.g., Teen Leaders.
• Fundraising volunteers: those responsible for the leadership and legwork that goes into successful fundraising campaigns and special events.
• Policy volunteers: those who serve on Y boards and committees, and those who act as trustees.
• Managerial volunteers: those who serve in the management and administration of the Y, usually lending special skill or talent in accounting, architecture, public relations, etc.

Support volunteers: those who help out in the office, in the locker room, in the facility, on the grounds, and in many other important ways.
